INTERVIEW: Ben Wilson Derby County Reaction

Sky Blues goalkeeper reflects on yesterday's win...

9 January 2022

Sky Blues goalkeeper Ben Wilson shared his delight to claim a clean sheet and progress into the FA Cup Fourth Round yesterday with a 1-0 win against Derby.

As Wilson showcased a number of impressive saves in yesterday’s contest, Dom Hyam’s header at the other end of the pitch on 42 minutes ensured that City remained in contention for tonight’s Fourth Round draw.

“A great result for the boys today, we had to dig deep at times but luckily we got the goal in the first half,” Wilson reiterated.

“Luckily Dom [Hyam] at the back stick headed it in and I think to be fair Godden tried his best to get a little touch on it and claim the goal, but luckily for Dom it’s his today.

“I was away celebrating; as soon as I saw it go back across the goalkeeper I thought that’s in, so I’m up celebrating!”

However, things could have turned out differently if Wilson had failed to make his emphatic save to stop Tom Lawrence in the opening minutes, and Ben spoke of the stop from his perspective.

“A few of the lads have come up to me there and said ‘what a save’ and ‘how did you save it?’ but it’s one of them where I seemed to see it all of the way and everything seemed to slow down.

“Luckily it was at the perfect height. If it was low, it could’ve flown into the bottom corner, if it was high it could’ve flown into the top bin but luckily it was at a comfortable height and it was a good, comfortable start and it got rid of the few nerves that I had before the game.

“It’s amazing for myself, obviously I’m really pleased again for the lads.

“You need momentum, and today with a 1-0 victory over Derby who are flying at the minute should give the lads massive confidence going into the next games.”

Wilson also spoke of the unity between himself and Simon Moore, as he mentioned the camaraderie between the Sky Blues goalkeepers.

“I remember going back years ago with Simon and even then when he was a young lad and I was a young lad we were both bouncing off one another by making each other better.

“He’s come into this environment where he obviously knows me as a goalkeeper and I know him, it’s great.

“If he plays, I support him. If I play, he supports me and I think that’s the way it has got to be.”
