COMMUNITY: Sky Blues players visit local schools!

22 February 2024

Last month a selection of Coventry City first team players got out and about in the community and surprised pupils across the city with Sky Blues in the Community.

Defenders, Liam Kitching and Kyle McFadzean were the first among visits arriving at Good Shepherd Primary, where they spent time with each year group, got involved in ‘pupil led Q&As’ and even got active in one year groups P.E. lesson, giving advice on close ball control and cheering the children on in their dribbling team races.

Howes Primary School were also among the surprise visits, treated with appearances from Goalkeeper, Ben Wilson and Defender, Joel Latibeaudiere.

Mel Walters, Assistant Headteacher at Howes Primary School said: “Children from Howes Primary School had a fabulous time when they were surprised by two special visitors from Coventry City Football team. Ben Wilson and Joel Latibeaudiere spent the afternoon with Key Stage 2 children, answering questions, signing autographs and even joining in with a football PE lesson. The children all thought it was amazing and learnt lots about the hard work and dedication it takes to follow your dreams and become a professional footballer.”

She added “Many thanks to Sky Blues in the Community, Ben and Joel.”

Some of the Howes pupils also commented on their special day:

"It was the best day ever. I met my hero - Ben Wilson"

"It was one of the best days of my life, getting to meet the players!"

The final visit of the day saw Captain Liam Kelly and Defender Jay Dasilva take a trip to our disability sports session, in partnership with Hereward College.

Amit, Sports Lecturer at Hereward College commented:Our Learners were delighted to welcome both Liam Kelly and Jay DaSilva to Hereward College. We have some massive Sky Blues fans who had the opportunity to meet some of their heroes. The way the players got involved straight away was brilliant, they had no hesitation about getting a bib on, getting stuck in and joining our Learners for a game. We have worked with Hereward College, providing targeted disability intervention for over 6 years. During that time, we have built long lasting relationships with the young people. They are all massive CCFC fans and the majority attend all the home games during the season.”

Amit continued to say: “Everyone at Hereward College would like to thank both Liam Kelly, Jay Dasilva and the staff at Sky Blues in the Community for this opportunity.”

Josh, one of the Learners, described the afternoon as: “an experience of a lifetime, I had the privilege of meeting not one but two professional first team players from CCFC. Liam Kelly and Jay Dasilva kindly had a kick about and answered some questions from myself and the other students. What a magical day it turned out to be, (Surely one I won't forget in this lifetime).”
